a co writer for a novel length story is wanted i am struggling to write this story as i dont know much about American football

Then perhaps it would be wise to choose a setting other than football.

A good story is mostly about people and their interactions. It could be based around any sport - or none at all. Plenty of good stories here take place at work, at summer camp, in the military, on a vacation trip etc.

The danger of basing the action on something you know little about is that people who might be attracted to a football story will be the ones most likely to catch and be annoyed by errors, and will stop reading and start complaining.
