Forum Option Request

Ernest Bywater ๐Ÿšซ

I find the most useful forum page is the 'All Threads by Date' list as it allows me to see the new posts on the one page. However, there are a couple of forum pages I avoid, but often accidentally click on new posts for them as they, naturally, appear on the 'All Threads by Date' list when I refresh it.

Thus, I wonder if it's possible to have a personalized variant which shows only the forum pages with new posts that I've selected. This could be a function with a My Account setting where I select the forum pages to display the posts since I last checked. It might even be a good option to include as a Premier Only function.

Wouldn't it be easier to implement a mechanism to block a thread you don't want to see so it won't appear on the "All Threads by Date" page? Maybe be able to right click on the green dot to turn it red which means it's blocked and won't show up.

ETA: And maybe override the block when your name is in the post.

If I read his post correctly, EB is talking about avoiding entire forum categories, not individual threads.

Thread blocking might be easier to implement, but it wouldn't give EB what he's looking for.

I think he used "forum pages" incorrectly. I think he meant threads. You don't see the Forum categories when you list the "All Threads by Date."

Actually, yes, you do.

This is how this thread appears for me in "All Threads By Date".

I never saw that line. One's mind plays strange games.

Along the same lines, it would be nice if the 'all threads by date' list caused the category list to be updated (i.e. if all the unread threads in a category are read, the category is marked read).

The reason I don't generally use 'all threads by date' is because seeing the categories marked 'unread' messes with my brain. ๐Ÿคช

@Michael Loucks

Not sure what your problem is here, Michael. The 'All Threads by Date' shows a list of the last 30 posts made on the threads with them in reverse chronological order so the latest posts are listed first. If there is a post in a thread I've not read the thread is shown as 'unread' while the ones where I've read all of the posts or marked them as read are shown with the grey stripe (as per the colour scheme I use). Thus the new posts are obvious due to being not greyed.

Also, if the thread has a new unread post in an old thread the more recent posts show with a yellow stripe around the date so i can tell which are the new posts to be read as against the older posts my system isn't marking as read for me.

If I want to mark all the latest posts in all of the threads as read I simply got to the 'All Threads by Date' and click on the 'tick mark' at the top of the list to mark them all as read.

The 'All Threads by Date' is updated properly. It's the main forum screen that is not. So, if everything in 'All Threads by Date' is marked read, and I go back to the forum, the categories on the main forum screen appear as if there are unread threads. Clicking into them shows no unread items AND marks the entire category read.

Ahh, I've not noticed that as I very rarely go to the main Forum page.

It's the 'completionist' in me. It bugs the hell out of me, but it's not actually a problem, per see.

So, if everything in 'All Threads by Date' is marked read,

The thing is, everything on the screen is marked read, not 'EVERYTHING' is marked read.

The data for read/unread is a client-side function. No data is tracked on the server. You can save the browser data to the server for safekeeping, but the server doesn't handle the data.

There is a limit in many browsers how big the localstorage database can be for a site and that limits how many threads are kept track of in the browser. The forum database is already up to 9000+ threads since the forum started. The local limit is around 5000, so can't really save ALL threads as read.

Anyway, clicking the check mark on top of the 'All threads by date' list will mark all sections as read.

That is exactly what I needed! Thanks!

Ok I don't understand the issue here. "All Threads by Date" shows just that, ALL THREADS BY DATE! It clearly shows what forum they are in so if you don't like that forum don't click on the thread.

Cause I'm lazy, and sometimes not awake enough to read that far. If it's not hard to code an exclusion option it makes things easier for me to exclude an unwanted option.
