Accepting .odt Files

MimiRay ๐Ÿšซ

I know, I know... I'm one of those people, the easiest to ignore due to small community size. A Linux user.

Still, I've read that SOL's server runs on Linux, so I'm hoping to find a touch of sympathy.

On the list of text files accepted for submission, .odt is not represented. I use Libre Office as my writing tool which natively outputs .odt files.

Yes, I know I can, and do, set my output to .docx, but it seems wrong to require a closed format to an open source system. I don't think it should be any real effort to accommodate the file type, and I'm wondering if it actually does already, it just hasn't been asked to be listed before.

I'm just asking for it because, you know, I'd like to see it, and if it was available I'd use it, and because, well, I'm one of those people.

Thanks!

That's okay, I'm a Windows user that also uses Libre Office. Just save in html, and screw docx. Those post quite nicely as stories here.

No, we don't require that. Actually, our .docx importer is crap and full of problems (I don't have the time to fix it currently, nor build a .odt importer), so if you're using LibreOffice and have to export your work anyways, export your documents as html if you have italics of bold in them, otherwise as .txt.

So I shouldn't be uploading .docx to the Wizard?

TLDR: Yes, it's best to avoid .docx when submitting stories

I created the .docx importer because a lot of people it seems don't know how, or are too intimidated by the process, to export their files to html when there is formatting and copy/paste is not sufficient.

It turned out that just like Word's screwed up regular html exporter (not the one marked 'filtered'), Word's .docx format is just as stupid and there is no .docx (filtered) format.

For example for heavily edited documents, like ones that go from author to editor and back multiple times, you end up with stuff like:

< p>< i>< span style="font-style:normal">Text< /span>< /i>< /p>

or

< p>< b>< span style="font-weight:normal">Text< /span>< /b>< /p>

Our .docx importer sees the < i> and the < b> tags, but doesn't see the css cancelling them, so you end up with italics or bold on the site where you can't see it in Word. To handle this kind of formatting correctly you would need a full blown xml/css parser, which is not exactly a simple job that I can do and add this feature to the site.

So, the site's .docx importer is rudimentary and best be avoided if possible. It's there for those who absolutely need it.

Assuming you have a .docx file that has been heavily edited, saving it as a filtered HTML file (in word) will correct the problems of nested edits you described?

Usually, yes.

@MimiRay

Thanks for the complete responses. I didn't realize the issues with .docx, so from here on out, html it is.

I assume that is a MS Word feature as LibreOffice doesn't seem to have such a thing. What is the difference between the filtered and normal html exports?

According to MS.

If you need to save a Word document as a webpage, your best bet is to use the Web Page, Filtered option.

When you save your document as a filtered webpage, Word keeps only the content, style instructions, and some other information. The file is small, without a lot of extra code.

@Keet

I've been using OO and recently switched to LO. I've had no problems posting HTML files exported from either without any modifications to the HTML.
