EPUB (Apple Books)

newport ๐Ÿšซ

I get an error message "Cannot Open (xvz) It is formatted incorrectly, or is not a format Apple BOOKS can open."

Any helpful hints will be appreciated.

@newport

I'm not sure about Apple, but the only formats allowed on Bookapy are EPUB, MOBI, and PDF. Calibre can make AZW3 files, which are the newer Kindle ones, but Laz doesn't let them be up because the new Kindles can still read MOBI. There's also 14 other formats that Calibre can output, and none of them are .xvz

I suggest you get the free Kindle reader, because Apple REALLY wants everything their way.

Any particular book? or all books? it would be odd if all books as nobody else is reporting such a thing. If it's a particular book, let me know and I'll take a look.

Perfect example Deja Vu Ascendancy by Ascending Author. There were others; however, this was a large story/file and wanted to read it using BOOKS/EPUB.

Thanks for replying/helping so promptly.

So, huge stories?

Yes, Books, while from Apple and has a nice interface, it's not the best app technically as it can't handle huge stories. It reports that something is wrong with the file whenever it runs out of memory even though it doesn't need to keep the whole file in memory.

You'll need to use something else to read the EPUBs of anything larger that 18000KB.

Given that downloads in iOS using Safari insist on opening ePub files in Books, with no other options available, that's a problem.

Get a better ePub reader. Save the file to disk rather than opening it directly from the download and them open it in whatever app you want.

Not really.

Safari now has a download manager (as of iOS 13), so you can choose what to do with the file. There are plenty of eBook readers on the App Store that can handle the job better than Books.

I have a reader installed called 'Bluefire Reader'. It can easily open the largest EPUBs.

I did a search in the App Store for "Bluefire Reader" and it didn't show up. There were others, but not that one.

I got it years ago. It could have been removed or maybe renamed since.

Bluefire Reader

That's not getting it from the Apple store. Just like I don't get Calibre from the Apple store.

For iPhone or iPad the only way to get it is through the App Store. Their links will lead you back to the app's page on the App Store.

It was with the introduction of the Download Manager that I lost the option of which reader to open an ePub with. I'd love to use my Kobo Reader app, but the only way I can find to do that is by side loading to Google Drive/Dropbox, which takes ridiculous hoops for downloads from websites (unless like Project Gutenberg they've set up connecting to it).

Downloading directly to my Kobo eReader is easy. To my phone, not so much.

Actually it's easy. iOS's one default app per filetype may be annoying, but it's easy to switch apps.

1 - Go to the 'Files' app. You'll find all the files you downloaded with safari listed, including EPUB files and they'll have the Books icon on them.

2 - Tap one of the EPUB files and hold to get the contextual menu.

3 - Tap 'Share' from that menu.

4 - Find the app you want to use as your default EPUB reader and tap it. (it may be under the three dots at the end)

The file will be opened with it and it will become your default reader, including files newly downloaded in Safari.

Every time you do this for a different app, it becomes the default until you do this again with a different app.

Or the next IOS update sets the value back to what Apple wants it set to.

Ah ha.

:redownloads Files: :fiddles around for a while: :cusses at the unintuitive UX hiding things in Share: :gets an ePub into the right app for once:

Thanks!

I use two ebook Readers on my PC and one on my tablet: FBReader and the Ebook Viewer that comes with Calibre. Both have versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux and FBR works on Android as well.

Not sure what you are trying to do but xvz is an extension used by MATlab, not an ebook.
