How difficult would it be to either make the Readers Comments section bottom posting or user selectable?

PS Why does the spellchecker say selectable is misspelled? Per Google and Dictionary.com it is correct.

What do you mean by that? When requesting a feature, it's best to explain exactly what you mean, by the most boring details. Don't assume that I understand from a hint.

The site doesn't provide spell checking in any of our text entry forms. It's your browser that provide spell checking services for text entry fields.

There are many valid words that are not in the dictionary used by the browsers.

Lazeez, I just read the newest Oyster50 story and comments. There are 4 pages of comments with the original comment at the bottom of the fourth page. Several of the comments are responses to previous comments. So to follow the conversation you have to start at the bottom of the last page and read the comment there. Then you have to jump to the top of the next comment and read down to the bottom, jump up one more and read down. This is top posting; the newest post on top. Many e-mail systems have this as the default but many allow you to change the setting to bottom post where the original post is at the top and the next directly below it. Then it reads in a sooth flow, like the stories on your great site. Before I retired my employer used top posting on the e-mail system. You'd have dozens of e-mails back and forth between the engineers, politicians, administrators, and the City Attorney. Finally they'd send it to one of the maintenance telling us what and how to fix something (usually something they didn't know anything about and the fix they wanted was often either a code violation, illegal, or wouldn't work). Trying to read and figure out what was going on meant scrolling all the way to the bottom and working up. Many time you read down and then had to scroll up to get to the beginning of the next reply.

I admit that having the newest post at the bottom would make it difficult to know when someone posted a new comment but just do like the forums: bottom post and shade for no new post. It's much less distracting and easier to read.

It's not practical to use chronological sorting instead of reverse chronological due to paging.

Remember, most people care about the latest comments. If a story has many comments (there are stories with over 10 pages of comments), then the reader will have to page through all those pages first to get to the bottom.

I'll see about adding a link to flip the order when needed.

I'm not so sure. For myself, I'd much prefer starting with the first and then, just like with the forum posts, scrolling down until I get to where I lost stopped, rather than always starting with the most recent where it takes a long, long time to figure out wtf is going on.

Perhaps a better option would be two buttons on the final page to go to the start/end of the comments. Thus someone just starting could get caught up before they start using the default 'last comments first' feature.

OK. But please don't start paging in the forum.

The story that brought this on is new with only 2 chapters posted so far and 4 pages of comments. It brought back bad memories having to go 4 pages in to start and working backwards.
