The search function apparently uses the space as a delimiter. So exact multi-word search strings aren't possible. Single word searches generally return a ton of hits all of which have to be waded through to get to the one I'm looking for. Would it be possible to introduce a delimiter to the search function so that the space would be a legitimate search character?
Enclosing your search query in double quotes switches to phrase search.
So putting "search function apparently uses" (quotes included) in the search field would only find the posts containing this exact phrase only. Although, testing it with this exact phrase right now might not work as the indexing might not have done the latest posts yet.
Same thing for the quick search on the home page. But neither have the full fledged contents search available in the advanced search page.

The function does not search user names in posts. Only what's in the actual text. If your handle Jim S was mentioned as is in the post, then it will be found, otherwise, it won't.
Although, the indexer does not index single letters. So even then it might not find your handle.
It appears to pick up my handle when it is linked in a post so that @Jim S shows. So it gets a partial match under the conditions you describe, missing only those where my post isn't linked.
However, in a test with "Jim S" entered, the post titled The Talisman from 2015 is one of those returned which contains only the string Jim. And I didn't post to that particular thread. That seems to indicate that anything past the space is ignored.

I tried searching for "Search forum poata" to see what happened. I got five results (not including this thread).
When I searched without quotes I found 13 returns, which included all three words in any order.
I really can't see the problem here. Who would realistically look for a single letter such as "a" or "I"? Realistically one would be looking for a phrase or uncommon word (it would take a merkin to search for "on" or "the").
On the 14th I put in a query in EXACTLY the format I would use on Google - putting quote marks before and after "Los Angeles". Never tried it before on SOL but it worked a treat. Thanks, Lazeez

Except that's not the original 'Story of O' which was written in 1954 by by French author Anne Desclos under the pen name Pauline Réage, and published in French by Jean-Jacques Pauvert.

Now that it's been mentioned in the forum, I did a search for "story of o". The results were as Lazeez would have predicted.
