Also, does someone editing a post cause it to be marked as unread to people who've already read it? I think it should, but then it would be a good idea to add a line at the bottom of the edited post to note it as edited.

You can simply ignore the box, it doesn't prevent to open another one in the tread.
if you want to undo unwanted editing, either ctrl+z multiple time will put it as it was or a page refresh (F5) will close it.

Done. There is a 'Cancel' button on the right of the box.

No. It won't make much difference unless the editing is significant.

Inside threads only. Each message has a timestamp on the top right. If updated, there will be additional 'updated' timestamp below it.

Oh. I thought the request was for the "All Threads by Date" topic. So that when you see the list of the threads that have been updated, you'd see what topic it belongs to (such as "Authors Hangout" or "Lost Stories").
This way, if I'm not interested in posts in the "Lost Stories" topic I would know not to click on it.

...and this sort of reply illustrates a valid reason for use of the 'Reply to topic' link, so it's not quite as redundant as I thought it was.
But maybe 'Reply to topic'/'Back to top'/'Forum rules' could be left,right and center in single stripe across the bottom, to save screen real-estate - opinions anyone?
