SOL Story Covers Portrait/Landscape

awnlee jawking 🚫

I logged into SOL, searched for the Author 'Vonalt' and clicked on his story 'Trust but Verify'. The cover page shows as landscape. I closed the story window and found 'Vonalt' again and clicked on 'Trust but Verify' again. This time the cover page showed as portrait.

(I noticed stumbled across this on FineStories but tried it on SOL this morning to see whether it was reproducible.)

It's about the width of the window and the text in it.

If the text block is less than 965 pixels wide, the system will load the portrait cover, wider than 964, then it will load the landscape one.

For custom covers it's one cover so doesn't change.

Something fishy is going on. I just hopped over to SciFi stories and clicked on 'Octopus' by Onebo The Red. The cover came up landscape. Then I clicked the reload symbol in Firefox's address bar and the cover switched to portrait.

Is there a way for me to find out how wide my browser thinks the text block is?

Nothing really fishy. The site doesn't know the text width in pixels by default.

What happens is that the first time a story is loaded, there is a function that checks the width of the text block and set it in a cookie. The next time a chapter/story is loaded, the cookie is sent with the request and the site's knows what to expect and sends the right image.

So the first load of any story when a reader starts reading, the site sends the cover according to the screen size which is deduced from the user agent string (mobile/not mobile), which is how the browser identifies itself.
