Indian or Indian ??

doctor_wing_nut ๐Ÿšซ

I just read a story with the tag "Indian Male", and it referred to a Native American male, but when I originally saw it I had no idea if it referred to someone from India or Oklahoma. The only clue was the 'Western' tag. Does it make sense to differentiate the two with different tags? I do not see one for Native American in the current tag list.

Well, I do not suggest identifying them this way:

One day my boss and I were headed out for lunch, and walked past the Big Boss's office. I asked if he would like to join us.

"Where are you going?"

"We thought Indian would be good."

"Is that the Curry Indians or the Woo Woo Indians?"

The one I hear most often is "dot or feather?"

The story tag definition is clear: "Male from the indian sub-continent"

Considering that it's technically incorrect to use 'Indian' for native americans, the author shouldn't have used that tag.

I don't know if there are enough stories to justify native americans having their own code on the site.

IMO there are no Native Americans - the human race did not evolve in America and everyone who lives there is an immigrant or descended from immigrants.

Is there a case for a 'first nation' or 'first people' tag covering the earliest settlers in one or many atates eg the Maori in New Zealand as well as those in Australia or the Americas.

So, by your argument there are no 'natives' of any place other than the Rift Valley? (Or possibly the Garden of Eden?)

@akarge

I'm open to the suggestion that Homo sapiens may have evolved more or less simultaneously in more than one place, because I believe some human remains in Asia, South Africa and the South of France are not consistent with the estimated time of settlement from the Rift Valley diaspora, but essentially yes.

(Ewww, I could be French if there was a separate human evolution there. That would explain my poor hygiene :-) )

The author shouldn't have used that tag because of SOL's definition of the tag, but a Western (story takes place in the Old West) would use Indian and not Native American. After all, they were often Cowboy and Indian stories.

When I was a kid, we played Cowboys and Indian.

Deepak pretty much knew which part he was going to play.
