Every now and then I get a strange format of the main story list page. No box around text, grey background.
I have image files I can send if you are interested.
Any idea why that is happening?

Sounds like your browser is occasionally failing to load the site's stylesheet.
Sure, send me a screen shot to confirm. My email is lazeez at storiesonline.net.
Lately I am having a similar event. When I look at the updated stories list, the second page often comes up in the format the OP described. If I toggle back to the first page, with the expected format, then back to p2, some times it clears up and sometimes it doesn't. Going to p3 usually has the expected format (classic) and sometimes not
Yes, it does that exactly. If I page through the updated stories list, random pages open in modern, while my preference is set as classic. There is no apparent pattern to the occurrence, although it seems to affect page 2 of updated stories more often than any other. I do not regularly look farther than page 3.
I use Windows 10 with Opera browser. The computer is an HP about five years old.

There must be some variable missing in the cache key generator that I wrote. However, I think it would be nearly impossible for me to fix. I use the site in Classic mode most of the time and have yet to get a modern display by mistake. So whatever this missing factor is, it doesn't manifest itself on my test systems. If I can't reliably replicate the issue, I can't fix the problem
I'll keep looking to see if I can figure it out.
Thank you. It is at worst a minor annoyance and certainly not worth a lot of you precious tome.
I'd like to pipe in and say that this happens to me semi-regularly (maybe twice a week). When it happened today on the "Serials Updated" page, I copied the address link and then opened the page in Safari and then Firefox. (I started out in Chrome). All three browsers showed the same wrong format, so this definitely seems to be a server-side issue and not a browser-side issue. A minute or so later a reload in all three browsers self-corrected the issue.
Additionally, the format doesn't appear to match any of the available themes. I use Classic by default, but when it does this, there are no boxes around any of the stories. In fact, the textured gray background is behind each story entry. I'd be happy to send a screenshot via email if you want to see what it looks like.
