Accident leads to new world with an RPG twist

Can a change of reality create a change of personality, aggressiveness, and initiative in a modern conformist?

Bored-with-life Average Joe MC has an accident of some sort and loses consciousness. When he awakens, he finds himself in a secluded forest glade/mountainside cave or other similar semi-isolated spot. Exploring the area leads him into several encounters in which he learns he is no longer in his world...or even universe.

He has to learn to survive in this new world facing many dangers he is woefully unprepared for...such as hunting/gathering food supplies, storage, contaminated foods, haggling, fighting, roving bandits, the idea of "might makes right" that seems to be central to this world, even political intrigue (as it exists in that society).

But try as he might, he soon fails and dies....only to re-awaken in the same location as he originally arrived in this world with the same initial clothes and items he originally had. The only thing different was his knowledge base, experience, and memory of what he had already been through.

It seems his life is now like an RPG - learn to survive and thrive or die and start from the beginning.

How often does an Average Joe die in such a situation? How many times does it take for him to learn the skills, knowledge, and attitude it takes for him to survive? Can he?

There used to be a story (incomplete) on SOL exploring some of those ideas. The title took the form of a large number (in the hundreds) followed by 'Deaths'. Since I can't find it, I suspect the author has deleted it. Shame - it was an interesting concept.

Actually i think i recall there was an anime based on a similar concept "RE: Zero" but i forget the rest of the title.

I don't know about a story but the movies :

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Boss Level (2020)

followed that idea of die, start over, remember, die, learn, ect.. ect..

yeah...lots of movies and stories out there with a "Groundhog Day" theme... but that is just it... it is almost always a single day repeating over and over until the MC gets it right. What I imagine is the MC continuously restarting regardless of when/how he died (it could be the same day, it could be months or even years between deaths) until he dies satisfied with his life.

He was bored with his life previously, stuck in a rut, conforming to the "norm" and repeating the same daily activities ad nauseam... and ended up in an alternate universe repeating his life there until he is satisfied with the result.

Have you read the excellent 'Across Eternity' series by Sage of the Forlorn Path? The protagonist is resurrected elsewhere/when every time he dies but there is no element of 'getting it right' - he even committed suicide - unless that is what solving the curse on him means.

'Second Chance' by Number 7 also isn't a straight 'Groundhog Day'.

yes, I loved Second Chance... very similar to what I was envisioning except for 2 points: the alternate universe I was envisioning would be a pretty lawless, kind of medieval place and in Second Chance MC was resurrecting into other bodies in order to troubleshoot the path humanity was on. In my idea, MC revives as himself, entire world resets to same point he initially entered, and his "purpose" (although he doesn't actively realize it) is to continue trying until he is satisfied with his life and actions.

On the other hand, I haven't read Across Eternity series yet. I will check it out. Thanks for the recommendation.
