I believe that these are two different stories. In one a boy (man)and a Girl both with fatal illnesses get sent to an alternate reality.
In the second one, a man gets sent to an alternate America and sets up a new country west of the Mississippi River. no slavery, plural marriage, and advanced tech

The second story, if I remember correctly has elements of moving a semi=stone age society into the iron age. with railroads, and metal mining. I may be overlapping stories.

There was one story where a man gets sent back, in the Americas, to the time before, a good bit before, the European white settlers came. He teaches the population of that time lots of 20th century tech and ideas. They had long distance communications via morse code using mirrors. I forget whether they had more sophisticated means than that, but at the end they has flight. They were then ready for the arrival of the first settlers. I think that was how it ended. He was not sent back too far in time, as far as I remember, not 12000 years, (I could be wrong, CRS is a pain, but I forgot where)
The communication via mirrors being taught by future man happens in the Robledo Mountain series by Kraken. But it is when Europeans are still moving in. ~1850 or so.
