So, what do I remember -
A couple (possibly siblings) return to / inherit their family homestead. They find a set of diaries from either the frontier or the civil war, MC uses them as a source for novels. A ghost adds to the stories and they eventually find another diary.

I have searched all the usual keywords and am drawing a blank
