I remember reading a story where a person was able to communicate with their nanos placed in their body which was not suppose to be possible by the designers.
I think he used them to take over the people. I do not remember if it was aliens or on planet. I could also be blending stories together.

I recall another story where the nanos became sentient if the reached a certain number. They began to communicate with hosts. I think the story took place around Santa Rosa, Ca. Female hosts had breast growth and used constant lactation to transfer nanos. Later started a breast milk ice cream dairy.
That sounds like the A Better World universe by Robert Wilson.
