Portal in frame of window in tall building; bad guy doesn't port, splat!

fafhrd ๐Ÿšซ

Well, I think I got the essence of the scene that I (mis?)remember into the topic. I'd been thinking it was one of the Damsels in Distress stories, but the ones I've read since I started trying to run this down weren't any of them it, and the others don't sound like they could be from the blurbs.

The scene I sort of recall might have been set in a corporate boardroom. Or not.

Thanks.

yes, it is a DiD story, am trying to think which one. I do remember reading it. The bad guy is trying to take over the business empire the girl inherited. If I remember which one I'll post a link. But it's not one of mine and I don't think it's one f Lazlo's

Interesting... I seem to have not even considered Aroslav's DiD sequence because I thought I'd read it recently enough that I would have remembered if that were where the scene came from. Obviously it's time for a reread if that whole plot thread has gone missing from my mind!

And Radagast, ah, seventies Analog! For some reason it seems entirely plausible to me that Aroslav might have borrowed from such a story. All good authors borrow! The better ones remember to file off the serial numbers. :-)

@Ernest Bywater

Indeed it wasn't - I had reread both yours and Laszlo's DiD stories, as well as some others (just an occasional recurring series or universe binge that I'm prone to), and while looking over the list I found I was trying to remember one that I couldn't place. Hence this thread, and thanks to everyone who contributed. As usual, the ones that aren't that story are equally interesting, even though they don't immediately scratch the itch that started it. :-)

Used in a sci-fi story published in Analog in the seventies, IIRC. Mexican revolutionaries kidnap a Portal engineer, make him build one exiting in Mexico city so they can invade. He sets it so the exit is 20 feet above ground....
I can't recall the title or author.

This description immediately, to me, brought to mind chapter 6 of Hard to handle by ElSol

I think I read a Swarm story by ElSol, but that goes back to before I was noting more than that I read a story. I think I used to have a mental memo to look at his others, but... so many stories, so little time. Maybe this will nudge it into the queue.

Thanks

https://storiesonline.net/s/72963/thinking-outside-of-the-box by Akarge uses a different twist on portals.

@Radagast

Yeah a portal-like (1) transport is a frequent McGuffin in Swarm stories. I must have read most, perhaps all, of Akarge's back when I binged my way through all the [then] collected Swarm stories, but that was entirely before I was keeping any notes as such. I used to foolishly trust the browser's history and/or bookmarks to remember things for me, and then one day that blew up in my face. :-(

Wow that's odd, when I originally replied to the thread there was no other replies but when I just now checked it out I see others and assume the missing story found and my reply thoroughly out of place lol.

Also to clarify I was half asleep when I originally replied and looking again I see my answer was close in some regards but off in others.

The story I mention has a scene in a modern board room but no "portal" like with magic, just a hole in said window that bad guys get sent of.

Also somehow missed the DiD bit, ElSol's story I mention is not part of that universe but is it's own thing.

I do hope you check out his other stories as they are quite good with interesting takes on things and I like them enough to consider him one of my favorite authors.
