Quabbin reservoir story

eg5305 ๐Ÿšซ

I read a story once set in an alternate universe in which the Quabbin reservoir in Massachusetts was never formed. The protagonist lived in one of the towns that, in our universe, were flooded.

It started out as a coming-of-age story, where the young man worked in a hardware store. He eventually went into the military, returned to his home and became a paramedic.

He got married and had kids, and the story follows their lives.

I tried to find this with a full text search, but I had no luck. Perhaps the story was withdrawn.

Does this ring a bell with anybody?

I'm currently in the middle of a major edit to ACL. Revised chapters through Chapter 10 have been reposted, with 11 and 12 pending.

For those reading the story before I finish the edit, I hope the transition from my new writing style to the old one isn't too jarring.

Will that re-edit extend to 'Through a Glass Darkly' as well?

Likely. There isn't as much I need to revise in AGAD, but it's there.

Glad to hear the story is still around. It popped into my memory, because we were traveling the Mass Pike through Massachusetts, as far as Sturbridge this weekend.

I mentioned the reservoir to my friends, and one of them asked if any of the submerged towns could be visited with dive gear. I said I didn't know.

It's a reservoir so, no, they don't allow it.

You can visit the Enfield Lookout, which is atop the Great Quabbin Hill mentioned in the first chapter of ACL, as well as Winsor Dam. You can walk and bike to what's left of Dana Center from Gate 41 or 42, and fish from a few other spots along the shore. The Prescott Peninsula, south of New Salem, is off-limits now. There used to be a radio telescope on the peninsula, but it closed about a decade ago. The only residents of the peninsula are now families of bald eagles.
