Post battle survivors crash on land on a planets. Human Space marine and feline species female survive and thrive. They friends with the natives And end up fighting a squid like species. I did the category search for aliens, space, military but I didn't see it.

I did a search for several of those words. A number of stories by Snekguy looked promising. The 'Or Die Alone' excerpt mentions 'they both feared the squid monster'.

The story should be Upon a Savage Shore by RipperFish. As far as I know that author isn't active on here.
