Dead Tree sci-fi

precepa ๐Ÿšซ

Looking for an old book I read when I was young.

It starts off with an a near death shaman leaving his tribe to pass away on a mountain. Sort of like the fabled Innuit old people walking off into the snow to die.

An alien vessel lands on him, the alien feeling guilty, "repairs" him. In effect making him immortal.

He has many adventures through history, and ends up fathering a lot of descendants, making incest sort of mandatory.

To avoid making his immortality known, he migrates from earth.
One section of the book is him and a woman stranded on on a highly toxic planet, where he can eat but his companion is slowly starving to death.

Later, he discovers the alien that repaired him, but to communicate with his creator he must become extremely large.
And proceeds to kick all the humans off the planet, while he devours the planet to gain mass.

I'm hoping this book isn't a figment of my imagination, as it was about 5 decades ago, that I read it.

And, yes I've used Google and other searches un-successfully.

There's a subreddit called What's That Book? that does quite well with this kind of question. Several of the regulars are bored librarians and similar.

There's also the Sci-Fi&Fantasy Stackexchange, where this kind of question also appears. Having seen that front page for the first time, I see there's also an eBooks site there for publishers/producers.

In the Face of my Enemy, by Joseph H. Delaney

"Casey, Shaman of a primitive California tribe, is gifted with immortality and the miraculous power of healing and survives the millennia--from PreColumbian America to the present--to seek his destiny in a quest to the stars."

Almost, it's like a short story from the complete work

Thanks. it's a starting point.

Yep, it was tickling something in the back of my mind. Once you found the author, I found the book on my bookshelves. 349 page-paperback. Plot very much as described by OP.
