The story is about a man working on a fishing boat that sinks but the crew get off but he gets separated. He wake in a desert area. At the end of each chapter he is evaluated and they let he progress. There are walled off areas but as they let he thru he meets other people and other biospheres.

I've read that one but not it. In this one you read the interaction between the boss alien and its subordinate. The first one he encounters is an older woman. Then a man and his daughter who is in water to begin with. Then a soldier who is female and a crashed helicopter. Ring any bells.
