Bragging rights to anyone who can name the story
Fragments I remember - Veteran (?) gets a job with a construction company on a road project. He dates (and eventually marries) the owner's daughter. He breaks a leg (?) when a tree falls on him. A contract for a road section requires rock to fill a swampy area and blasting through rock - I think a well is bored to divert a stream (?)
I am 99% certain I read this on SOL, but can't spot it in my history

Did they also do something with a local landowner to the benefit of both? IIRC the local landowner was not overly happy at first until they had a confab. The rock came from the local's land and filling in the swampy area helped both as well as diverting the stream. I thought that might help someone remember then I can read the story again.
Not sure if it's the same story. However, I remember reading a story a few years back where the MC is involved in constructing a road on a farm and it links the parts of it on different sides of a mountain and part of it involves filling in a swampy area. At one point they involve another old farmer who has adjoining property. I'm not sure if the road is just a farm road or a highway type road that just happens to cut through the mountain to make the link.

I'll have to re-read it, but doing some spot checks, I think it's the story I was thinking of.
