These families favored their daughters and ignored their sons, so the boys left home as soon as they turned 18. MC finds a female cousin at college, and she doesn't understand why he hates her.
At some time she mentions that all the girls received new cars when they turned 16, but none of the boys did.

"Out of the Cage" and "Reaching for Wings" by Wes Boyd - on his site - had this as a sub-plot, with the Frankovich family. Rusty Frankovich set a trail pointing towards the Marines - to mislead his family - and then joined the Air Force.
Thanks for confirming tangoperu! I'll have to give it a read! It does say it's concluded though - Concluded: 2/13/2012, 1:03:25 AM, so I hope it is as I don't care much to read stories that are "incomplete and inactive".
