The story is a do over time travel I think. Kid gets rich with his inventions, makes his wife a magic sword, she died on top of the world trade center on 9 11 having used her sky cycle to save people. He gains an island in the south Pacific and turns it into a special place. He has a crystal statue of his wife erected so their kids will be able to maintain some connection to her. Ring any bells.
