I can't remember the name of the story or the author.
Story outline is, part Native American part white teenager, get sent back about 1500 years, in what would become France. He rescues some kidnapped girls/women and takes them back home. From there he builds a civilization, basically jumping the whole region forward by hundreds of years, before being brought back to his original time, which has been changed because of his actions.
