Story like Refusenik's Human Man

davenothere 🚫

Looking for a story that I read awhile ago. The MC is a young boy that has had problems with his mom. A AI from a alien race enters his head. I think that he can make or change crystals to make computer. I believe that he saves his neighbor from some people trying to get picture of her and his friends.
I know it might not be alot to go on but any help would be appreciated.

Possibly Space by John Wales.

I may be mistaken on the title, but I recall one of his stories involved a young boy who could use his mind to create/process the crystals some alien race used for computers, and a alien AI recruiting him.

Otherwise, there's a small chance it'd be from Sir Winston.

After checking... I'm pretty sure it's Space.

The teaser for this story looked interesting so I started it. It's a good story so far but the big surprise was when the M/C changed names between chpt 3 and chpt 4. Brian became Greg. Are there more oopses to come?

The family's last name changed from Connor to Ryan in ch4...and in ch5 the dad's name changes from Charley to Steve...

It does need a good editor, but I found in a fun read.

mc's age changes from 15 to 13 in another chapter,,I gave up after the other family came into the story and their house was burned down,,,

I'm going to start tomorrow on the other story "Space" mentioned in this thread.

It also really needs editing. Ol' John several times started out writing stories in third person, then just shifted to first for no apparent reason.
Ah well, could've been worse. At least he never bothered with that present tense nonsense.

I find an on-going highly-rated serial irritating because the author keeps switching between past and present tenses for narrative.

I do that :) no idea how to stop it and can never see them all afterwards...

@Sparky-1953

That will ruin a story almost as fast as it not being complete

These are amateur writers letting us read for free. I'm willing to cut them some slack as long as it's readable. I thought I left a second post but must not have hit the Post button. There's an obvious cliff hanger at the end setting up a sequel but I can't find one.

SOUNDS LIKE THE SPARK !!! GOOD STORY. STORY BY ZORAS.

I've looked at the title to this post for the last two days and finally read it. I'm sort of glad that no one had said "Such and such a story is like Refusenik's "Human Man" because I'm very much of the opinion that there are no stories on SOL anything like "Human Phoenix" and "Human Man". I think those two are, perhaps, two of the greatest stories on SOL and IM (not so) HO, nothing compares to them. Write, Refusenik, write dammit!

I'm sort of glad that no one had said "Such and such a story is like Refusenik's "Human Man"

"Island Mine" was kinda like it.

But really, the reason is that the OP named the thread badly. He was trying to track down the story Space by John Wales (which had some similarities to Human Phoenix if you take a look at specific elements).

Regret to tell you that Refusenik has already departed this life. I so was looking forward to more of his writing. We did get his 3 stories and are better for having them. For any more we will have to get a library caed in Heaven's infinite library! Sorry but I share your desire for more!

My biannual look around hoping refusenik is back and wishing there was an answer here….

Some great authors who just up and disappear… statsultan, refusenik, jammyjimmy is back on lit, but these are the authors I keep checking back for.

Jay Cantrell kind of too, but I'm just hoping he's living his best life.

Thank you. That is a relief. I hope that he is doing well and will return to writing as soon as possible. He is one of the most gifted writers on this site.
