Not the story I thought it was, iirc, mc was on trial for murder and woman was his choice for defence attorney. Someone was killed by a sheriff in the courtroom. I thought it was the MC. My bad sorry
In the story I'm thinking of the woman da was his attorney, and I'm wondering if it wasn't her that got shot in court. A pissed off sheriff hated mc so much he wanted him dead at all cost.
The cop shot at the DA. The MC (her husband) took down the shooter. The black gangbanger stepped in front of the bullet.
