Do you mean the shapeshifter was a Barron (a minor noble/feudal lord)? My understanding is that the concept of a land barron (someone who owns lots of land and rents/leases it out) would be much more recent.
Also, is this shapeshifter a werecreature of some kind or a polymorph(can take almost any form)?
