It's The Governor's Fault

red61544 ๐Ÿšซ

Since the governor has ordered us to stay at home, I've been rereading stories that I had started and never finished. This one should be easy because I remember that it was a popular story. Teenage MC w/o parents lives with his sister who runs a catering business. The MC fills in when she needs help. At a wedding reception they were catering, the new stepdad accosts the daughter of his new wife trying to force her to become friendly with a young man whose father the stepdad wants to impress. (Damn that's a long sentence.) Stepdad gets physical with the girl and the MC intervenes. Thus a long serial begins. Help!

Thanks, Dinsdale. That's the one. That's 43 chapters to relieve the boredom.

There is another story that many feel was a rip-off of Spirals as it only changes a few parts but ends up way darker in the end. It is by Marc Nobbs.

Lellan McLemore also wrote an excellent Star-reunites-with-highschool-love story - https://storiesonline.net/s/48234/axe-victim
I wonder when his stories are going Premier-only.

As an aside, a story posted an hour ago is included in the "Stories about to be archived" list. That would make sense if there were other stories by the same author in the list and the system had not noticed the new one yet, there aren't.

I noticed that, too. I think it's an occurrence of something I've seen, commented on, and been informed about before : there are some authors who have given Lazeez license to repost here stories of theirs he finds elsewhere. If such an author has met the archive criteria (no login for 5 years), then such a story will be immediately in the 'about to be archived' state; unfortunately, last time I saw this happen the story became fully archived at the next archive check, so in this case I expect it to go at 2020-04-12t04:30Z - that is, such stories only get a half-day of non-premier access. Note that that author also has a number of stories posted in 2017, with a total of 27 stories, 26 of which are premier (the only non-premier being the noted story).

@madnige

Either that or it's a bug (archive flag not cleared when an author resurfaced). The story has been archived.

@Dinsdale

It's off the list again, as I expected. It's just like the multiple-authors stories problem (when the last author of a multi-author story achieves archive status, the stories are promptly archived rather than having the week's grace) which Lazeez has stated is too much work for the few stories affected; the mental model of the code I have assumed required to have that problem also has this bug, but if my model of the code is correct, it really will need a ground-up rewrite of the archiving code and more, as the underlying data structures I'm assuming cannot support the data required to make an archived/not decision on a per-story basis. In effect it is as you've said, but with the added wrinkle that the author has not resurfaced so the archive flag shouldn't be cleared.

I can't find the reference, but I do remember seeing something over 10 years ago that Katie McN had been inactive for some time due to health issues and was thought to be deceased. I'd love to be wrong about that, but I don't think I am.

I received the sad new long ago that Katie McN passed away from cancer around 2007, 2008.

I was looking around my archives recently and stumbled on the stories she had sent me and thought it's time to complete her archive. They include some stories by her girlfriend at the time Alicia D.

I have about 20 stories that haven't been posted to SOL.

Hey, thx all for the suggestions! Now I find some new old authors to go read. It's crazy that I've browsed this site for so long and yet have never found these before. Exciting though that is, it's also a frustrating failure in web design. Oh well.

I'm interested. With almost 46 thousand stories available, you are frustrated because you've just found (by asking) a few that you'd not read before...

How exactly could the web design have been modified to serve these stories up to you on a platter..? Presumably without your needing to actually -do- anything.
