What I remember:
Alien machines (?), (Don't think Personalia) Hiding on dark side of the moon. They contact us when we develop FTL drive. We eventually destroy the alien race that had attacked several different civilisations.

I remember a story line where sparta was mentioned with space ships involved. Also it may be one of the Swarm stories. I can not remember the names of individual stories however this may jog someone else's memory

No. It was a giant cannon buried under the surface of the Moon.

Technically, the moon doesn't have a dark side in the sense that phrase is normally used. It's tide locked to the Earth, not the Sun.

That is indeed the story(sorry
just read this post). He condensed and expanded several of his stories and published them. There are still several very good stories in the series on SOL.
