I'm looking for 2 stories
1)
Set in Canada (I think) about a young man that starts working in his local shop and eventually becomes the manager of one. The guy that owns the shop was originally from Vietnam.
2) A guy playing poker wins a business selling jerky.

The one I'm looking for is set in Canada and the guy works in his local shop (I think most Americans would either call it a 7-11 or convenience shop)that is owned by a guy from Vietnam. The shop owner buys another shop in a different town and the guy moves and runs that one. I can't remember if there was a romantic side to the story.

Following Dory *does* take place in Canada (BC, I think). The protagonist works for Eddie Chan, who owns several grocery stores. I think the protagonist ends up in Victoria.
Got further into the story and it is the one I was looking for. I didn't remember him playing football or needing help with his maths. Thank you
I just finished dory and every once in a while I was confused as to where they were.he talks about the local football team being the lions which if they were in b.c. then it would be the seahawks.he also mentions the Midwest accents again not b.c. , then he mentions Victoria or other western waterways.

The Seahawks are Seattle, WA and in the NFL. The BC Lions are based in Vancouver, BC and part of the CFL.

I haven't read the story, but this is a fairly understandable type of author error. Canadian accents in general, excluding Atlantic Canada, tend to be fairly neutral; since the Midwest accent is generally considered to be the "mainstream" American accent, I can see how someone who doesn't know linguistic terminology might use it as a reference point.
In reality, other than the fact that Canadians still use British pronunciations for some words, such as pronouncing the "ei" in either and neither as a long "i" (eye) rather than a long "e" (bee), the accent in BC is basically the same as in Washington and Oregon. For reference, there are eight recognised English Canadian dialects (accents) in total.
