That actually sounds like a good story, or could be. I think I'll hang out and see what develops :)
I know the story you are talking about, he stayed in a motel across the street. I just can't think of the name.
I thought it was Wes Boyd as he has a few stories with that idea. I can't believe I didn't save it. I tend to save every story I like.
It's available on his web site for $4.99. Just search for Wes Boyd and you should be able to find it.

It's available to view for free there, you may purchase it to have a local copy. Another one of his is also a divorce-themed BTB, Best Served Cold
Since there are now only about two written-but-unpublished works left, I guess that that site will go away within a couple of years, once the income from sales (additional income for his widow) drops below the maintenance costs (or the need for income goes away because she joins him). Grab 'em while you can.
Depends what you mean by "series." Square One is the only story with Danny as the main character, though he does appear in Hiding Patty.
His stories are intertwined in many ways, but not all are connected.
Doing a text search, Danny also appears in:
- Busted Axle Road
- Runner's Moon (these two before his marriage)
- Facing the Storm (briefly)
- Magic Carpet (briefly, at the Redlite)
- River Rat (ditto)
- Pulling Even (with Debbie, major character)
- Hannigan's Cove (briefly)
- Bird on the Field
- Birdwatcher Hill Fire
- Down by the Riverside
He really becomes "part of the furniture" in Spearfish lake. Ouch!
