A while ago, I read a story about an ex-military man looking for love and someone suggests that he go somewhere an buy a wife. He finds a woman and falls in love with her, buys her from the auction, and brings her home but he doesn't force her into anything. Any help is appreciated.
Not that one, although that is a fantastic story. The one I'm looking for is set in modern times. Thank you though
I think I've read this story (or one very similar). I can't remember the author but I think they are South African and have written quite a few stories. I believe the woman he buys was Polish (she says dak/tak and he assumes it means yes)

The story you're thinking of is Mail-Order Bride by BoonDock. You are right it's in S. Africa. The girl is from Russia, or maybe the Ukraine. I was following it until BoonDock stopped writing in 2012.

Last I heard he wasn't writing because he was very busy in his real life job as an officer in the S.A. Military on border patrols.

I didn't see it as a criticism, I saw it as a I wonder what he's doing comment, and provided the answer. I know where he works has been in a lot of turmoil for the last few years with the neighbouring countries having armed rebels looking to cross into his country to cause trouble or to hide from their own governments, thus he's been very busy. I'm sure he'll go back to writing when he can. There are the odd moment he visits the forum to make a comment, but that needs him to have the time, the computer access, and the Internet access all at the same time, which isn't often.
