Organ player

duckunge ๐Ÿšซ

I read a story once and never got to finish it I've tried looking for it but can't find it the MC is an organ player and is auditioning for a music school and when he shows up for the audition they have a piano for him to play he says sorry I can't play the piano I thought I made it clear in my application that I only play the organ or something along those lines anyway they end up having to take him to a class room where they have an organ (as you know it is not the type of instrument you can carry around in a case) and interrupt a class so he can play for them.

I remember the audition went very well and all the students (who's class they interrupted) and the staff gave him a round of applause.

an electric organ is one thing. If a school has a proper pipe organ, it would have to be in the auditorium or the gym.

@Dominions Son

There are many small pipe organs that easily fit inside of a room.

@Ryan Sylander

here are many small pipe

Small is relative when it comes to pipe organs. Fit inside a room, sure if the room is big enough. I rather doubt a typical primary/secondary classroom is big enough for even the smallest pipe organs.

Sure, with a smaller organ, the console may fit in a smallish room, but then there are the pipe banks and the blower.

http://apoba.com/resources/publications/planning-space#general_guidelines_for_pipe_organ_size

The smallest console would take 25 square feet of floor space.

Note that for the smallest organs listed, the pipe ranks would require a minimum of 10' of vertical space and 24 square feet of floor space (3 ranks at 8square feet per rank).

So the smallest pipe organ requires a minimum of 49 square feet of floor space and an 11 foot ceiling.

Oh, and all told a pipe organ would require 6-11 dedicated electrical circuits.

Then you have to deal with the acoustics of putting such a large, loud instrument in a small confined space.

@Dominions Son

There are many practice pipe organs that are made for that purpose. Concert halls at a music school are heavily booked, so practice organs are a must. Check out the Noack organ at Juilliard for example, or look at the practice organs at Westminster CC, for examples that fit in regular rooms.

ETA: I posted during your edit. Your source there is for concert hall organs, not for standalone practice instruments. As for the acoustics, organ need not be a loud instrument. Sure, you don't get the reverberations and the sound will be compressed, but that's true of many instruments that can get loud in a small space.

it wasn't a classroom, it was an auditorium, and it was a pipe organ.

I did a search of 'pipe organ music school audition' and came up with "moving Day' by Mendon Fishers

word search is at the bottom of the advanced search page

Below the word search there are 2 links to search references that give you all the help you need to create a very specific search. It's a bit of a study but good searching is a science on it's own.

When I tried the same search, it came up with 96 possibles and "Moving Day" was Number 27. Why would my results be so different?

@PotomacBob

He didn't actually say it was the only or even the first result.

Why would my results be so different?

depending on how you word the search and the options the system will look for full or partial matches. A search on organ can match with organization and Morgan as well as organ or with different options and search code will look for just organ while some searches will look for a multi-word search with the words anywhere in the text but others will look for the words beside each other. It all depends on the type of search engine and the options you use for the search.

There was more than one response, but Moving Day was the only one in my library, and I had read the story before.

...but, the 'quick search' on the main page is a word search available to all, you just need to use careful choice of words to get a small enough result set to have your desired result in the visible matches.

ETA: doing a quicksearch for [organ music school audition] just includes the suggested match, at position 50.

Maybe a different meaning for "organ"? Sometimes music, sometimes biology.
