I read this one in the early 2000's, an old man kills himself and jumps to an alternate timeline in the past (1950s). He starts an accelerated education track and starts receiving help from a descendant from the future who bring biological computers allowing him to reprogram his body. He 'invents' spaceships and starts secretly going to space.

I have never heard of this one, but it sounds interesting.

Sounds like Retreads by rotedrachen, except he didnt intentionally kill himself nor is there a descendant from the future

For as much as I have read of it, it sounds like the 'Second Time Through' series by Phil Brown.

Are you sure it was in 2000? The plot looks similar to https://storiesonline.net/s/11710/mayhem-in-a-pill-science-fiction-story by Shiner drinker. Ongoing story so it's unlikely but worth reading.
