The reservoir is built over a few generations.
The reservoir is built over a few generations.
While the main reservoir / dam is built over multiple generations, a young Mack is involved in helping to construct the cistern hidden in the damn wall.
More details would help. Time frame, type of story, that sort of thing. Western, post-apocalypse or current time frame.
PA story: radio guy has several where dams are built for hydro power
Western: I know there is one where he dams up a stream on his in-laws place. lots of back and forth with enemies attacking trying to disrupt efforts.
current stories; I am unfamiliar with any

For a current story, surely the dam would have to incorporate a hydro-electric generator?

depends on the size of the dam and the dam wall, and the main purpose of the dam. In a lot of cases you'd be better off putting a generator in a stream to generate power instead of building a dam.
most of the hydro power dams I have seen in stories are in post-apoc stories. Of the ones I have seen of preppers, none involve the son building it.
Current time frame as opposed to currently posting stories. Sorry if I wasn't clear about that.

Arrgh! The grinning dick, distaff side!
On Topic:
I've a feeling that Human Phoenix incorporated the MC damming a stream to shape a pond on the orphanage..
ETA: My bad, he was only involved in cleaning it and putting it to use (unless there's more relevant later in the story). I (don't quite) hate these lost story threads for stories I've read and enjoyed, because I tend to get sucked into reading them again.
remember very little.. think there was some digging to shape the reservoir... and clearing brush and debree..and later stocking fish..then connecting another valley to add to size..maybe building a house to over look it...thanks

I don't know of any story where all of this happens.
However, in Boone toward the end Boone builds a dam across two valleys to create a reservoir with an overflow into the next valley, but all I quickly describe is him building the dams and the pipes - it a western in the USA.
In Mack the family builds a reservoir over generations by filling in the end of the valley, and he later mentions he shaped parts of other valleys and cleared brush to make hunting the rabbits there easier. - modern time farming / coming of age story in Australia.
In Finding Home he buys land and has a stream through part of it shaped to create little dams for recreation purposes and the dams are seeded with fish. Set near Frederick, Maryland, USA in modern times.
In the end of Gunslinger Mike has the main character build a dam to turn the area into good farmland - western in the USA.
In The Legend of Eli Crow he builds a damn when he sets up his ranch - western in USA.
There's a few stories where people build dams, but very few with fish stocking. As I remember the names of others I'll mention them.

He may be combining "Mack" with "Flames of Life" that you also wrote. The stocking of fish and house building was definitely in "Flames".

ayep, but he didn't build a dam, as such. After over 100 stories it's not that easy to keep them all straight in your mind at once. Count the unfinished ones and its over 150.
There must be many stories on this site matching your description, but one I read recently with elements in common was 'Country Boy' by SW MO Hermit.

I don't know if you read Fine Stories, but an old one by T.C. Allen (published in 2011) had the son damn up and capture spring water that they later used to get them through some of the worst times during the Great Depression. They collected fish after a flood in a water wagon and put them into their new lake.
A really great story: DEPRESSION SOUP
"Depression Soup" is actually on SOL under the Author Wordytom. On Fine Stories it is a Premium story, but here on SOL, it is not.
Sorry I didn't go into the different pen names, but I'm not even sure if this is the story he is looking for. I have read it two or three times and appreciate the values he shows and writing skills of the author. His other stories are also great, IMHO. Since we are all Premium at FS, it isn't a problem.
