a guy (former military) living in a hangar (cave) isolated from everyone and hiding because he's "responsible" for a massacre ...(according to some politician)

an alien princess (or close) is attacked by another alien race and has to hide on hearth, he finds her and accept to help her...

the bad aliens release a toxin to kill the princess that rends feral all the animals on hearth, except his dog(s) because he(they) was(where) too isolated to be infected ...

the main thing I remember about that story is he claimed Coronado island and always moved in a LVSR truck

anyone remember the title ?

I don't know why in my bookmarks I always thinks "giants in the sandbox" is some sort of heroic fantasy story :/
