I have been reading earth's core and it reminded me of another story I read but never completed.
I think the person arrived from another dimension and join a guild, then eventually ended up running the city or the guild. There were forest or area with high level monsters. He had a lackey or follow that also had the ability to force anyone to the ground or kill on the spot.
