Kind of buddy story. Nerd/geek always got picked on in school. One day takes all his books home planning on committing suicide but someone friends him on the way home. At there graduation, he thanks him for saving him.

I kind of remember the premise, but can't remember exactly the author and story.
He did take the books out, so that his family isn't burdened, right?
And now you have me on a mystery. ^^
I searched my saved CoA stories for suicide, but nothing came up (except for deja vu ascendency, but that is another beast)
That's a scene from The Millionaire Next Door

It comes up when one of them is explaining why they're great friends to someone else later in the story.
One story which comes close - but probably not close enough - is https://storiesonline.net/s/41292/the-ghosts-of-christmas-past from Don Lockwood.
Another story from him with a similar theme is https://storiesonline.net/s/46119/heroes
Heros have same theme but it's not it. MC is male and so is the friend. The friend is the poplar one. It's not The Millionaire Next Door. I have to reread ghost though. It's been awhile since I've read Don's work.
