I had forgotten about this story (now added to my list)
Thanks
oriental
You probably can describe a human being as an oriental here, but where political correctness rules (nearly everywhere) only rugs are oriental. People are Asian. Just a word to the wise. Today "colored people" are African American, the NAACP where CP stood for colored people is careful to just use the initials. The correct term changes over time. Once upon a time at least in the South (of the USA) There was a word that resembles Nigerian, then politeness required Negro, then Colored Person or person of color, Black was in there for a while, and its been African-American for a while. Be alert for change. Lack of political correctness will sometimes bite you.
In the UK, 'African-American' seems to be falling out of favour. 'Black' is currently the in-word, but the once deprecated 'person of colour' has recently made a comeback.
Keeping every militant satisfied with your terminology is impossible :(
BTW, I've recently heard the more accurate term 'First Settler' used instead of 'Native American'.
AJ
Didn't see the series, but in the book the best piece of PC is FBI, meaning Fuckin Big Indian.
Edited because of brain fart
FBI, meaning Fuckin Big Indian
I thought FBI means Fart, Barf, and Itch.
(found in S.M. Sterling's "Conquistador")

IIRC, those 'first' settlers came in multible waves and the very first people settling in North America aren't there anymore, they were displaced, absorbed, enslaved or outright killed.
The ancestors of the tribes living today in North America were 'Second Settlers' or 'Third Settlers'.
BTW, what happened to the term 'Amerind'?
HM.

I thought those people self-styling themselves as 'Native American' were descendants of any number of waves of colonists from Central Asia before the first white settlers arrived. Wikipedia (spit) doesn't seem to contradict that. Do you have a more authoritative source of information?
AJ

Right, but those waves were different tribes with different languages and the newer settlers often took over already settled areas.
Guess what happened to the settlers already there? As I stated, they were displaced, absorbed, enslaved or outright killed.
Oh, sometimes the new arivals failed in conquering the settled areas and had to treck further south.
But AFAIK none of the very first wave survived as a distinct tribe in North America.

from Wikipedia:(bold and italics set by me)
In 2014, the autosomal DNA of a toddler from Montana, dated at 10.7k 14C years (12.5-12.7 cal years) BP was sequenced.[63] The DNA was taken from a skeleton referred to as Anzick-1, found in close association with several Clovis artifacts. The analysis yielded identification of the mtDNA as belonging to Subhaplogroup D4h3a, a rare subclade of D4h3 occurring along the west coast of the Americas, as well as geneflow related to the Siberian Mal'ta population. The data indicate that Anzick-1 is from a population directly ancestral to present South American and Central American Native American populations. Anzick-1 is less closely related to present North American Native American populations.
BTW, what happened to the term 'Amerind'?
Haven't heard that word but Amerindians are the "natives" in at least some South American countries
its been African-American for a while
Question: Is a descendant of a boer who is born in the US an African-American?
I know he is an Afrikan(d)er if he is born in South-Africa.

Boers are the descendants of Dutch settlers in South Africa. Hence, of European extraction. They repudiated all connections with Holland a very long time ago, and do not consider themselves as Dutch; The Dutch East India Company did not treat them very well, to put it mildly. Sadly, when they established their own sovereingties, they acted towards those already there the very same way that the Dutch East India Company had acted towards them; it was the governmental structure most of them had grown up with.
So no, not as African-American is normally defined, being an American-born descendent of Sub-Saharan African native peoples. [Did I succeed in avoiding any non-PC terms there?]
Some Boers do not mind being considered Afrikaner, others do; it depends upon if they see themselves as being culturally distinct from the larger Afrikans-speaking populace; Wikipedia indicates that there is still a seperatist movement. So whether to term American-born descendents Boer-American, Afrikaner-American, or just plain American would depend upon how they self-identify. None of them would accept Dutch-American, not if they considered themselves to be of Boer descent.

AFIK, the term includes first generation immigrants from the relevant African native populations with US citizenship.

I'm surprised that Awnlee didn't point out that in the UK "Asian" generally refers to Indo-Chinese, Chinese, Japanese and those of similar appearance. Separately there are South Asians referring to Indians, Pakistanis and those of similar appearance. then of course the word Arab includes a number of those who are not truly Arab, not necessarily Moslem, but come from that general part of the world.
I'm not familiar with people from the Indian Subcontinent being called South Asians. It seems to me that the media seems unsure what to call them since Indians and Pakistanis are so keen to be presented as differing :(
AJ
people from the Indian Subcontinent
Maybe they are sub-continentals?
Just don't call them orientals, or late for dinner.
PC in itself is a flowing construct.
Some comedians have joked about the classification of people of color and tried to make the term "maximum pigmented" in vogue.
Nah, FBI means Famous But Incompetent. (or Federal Bureau of Ineptitude)
Said that above.
sorry, I missed it
Federal Bureaucratic Incompetents - is that still free?
I'm just as interested in the rest of the body. ;)
Specialization is the in thing these days. If you inspect the whole body, how are other guys supposed to get in on the action?

When I was in the army I wa with a guy that was born to missionary parents in Africa and he was as white as Prince Andrew, but he checked African American on paperwork.when the found out he was white they got pissed.he told them as a person born in Africa now in America he could check that box.he said if you were not born there you have no right to check it.then bitched and said if you hyphenated your status to anything before American you had divided loyalties and America was not first.
America was not first.
West Point (the United States Military Academy) put Duty and Honor before Country.

Ah, did you deliberately use the verb 'put' making the sentence ambiguous? Did or do they?

There is an interesting dicotomy between demanding that all other immigrant groups assimilate into the dominant culture and ditch everything that makes their background distinct, and the fact that the dominant culture is itself based upon a culture brought to this country via immigration.
That it won't be very much longer before there is a change in what culture is really dominant, numerically, may have something to do with the current backlash from certain segments of the populace.
Something that has to be brought to the fore periodically is that just as there is no established religion in the country, there is no established language.
Which has the downside of no legal argument for why official signs and notices aren't in X language, if there is any significant language base. Depending upon the sign, practical considertions require limiting the number of languages that can be included in that sign if it is to be readable at the distance expected.
Have you ever gone to a gov. Building and wondered why they have a sign with 10 dif languages saying point for language? Why should my taxes pay for someone to get gov help that not can't but refuses to learn the dominant language of a country? If I go to France I don't expect everyone to speak german, english,or Russian so why do they do it here
Recent immigrants and tourists need help too.
Should we require them to learn English before they even leave their home countries?
Would you make English fluency a requirement for getting a visa?
Until the early 1900s immigration required minimal reading and speaking english.the actual test required all 3 and most dropped the home country completely to be seen as American citizens.now it's mexican-,asian-,or whatever before American. If you don't want to be American first why come here?if you want change American laws to fit what you had back home why come here?if you don't want your kids living, loving,or becoming Americanized why come here?if it was so great that you want America to be just like home then why did you leave?

In some cases, a even someone who has earned a doctorate in English needs a translator (Liar er lawyer) when dealing with the government.
