Are there any stories out there that deal with depression? Not just a short period in the story, or that a side character has depression, but someone actually dealing with it.

Try "Samuel" by Lazlo Zalezac. Definitely not an uplifting story but deals with depression well.
In this one, the depression goes away pretty much after the introduction/part one, as I remember. Still a good read though.
My stories, 'A Well-Lived Life' and 'A Well-Lived Life 2' tackle depression (and other emotional problems). It's not the main theme, but it's infused throughout the entire story, both the MC and the supporting cast.
And then there could be stories set in the 1930s when there was a world-wide depression. Depression is not always an emotion.
avoid Depression by Cmsix ... the MC is depressive for about 1/2 page and then it's a Christmas list

It seems to me to be a pretty good story. I am only a few chapters into it, but it looks like a better than average story. A lot of veterinary medicine, adapted to 1620 Cado Indians. All those wounds could be depressing.
never said it was bad ;)
only that depression was just a pretext for the story and not the subject

I've got a sci-fi tale about someone fighting fantastical sources of mental illness, as a way of showcasing the kinds of things that those specializing in 'alternative health' practices face. It's called "The Demons Within", and is currently posting (someone not specified) but hopefully will post to SOL soon (unless, of course, the story tanks, in which case I might just decide not to risk more terrible scores). :(
However, it and it's sequel are based on my own varied experiences with mental health over the years, so while it's 'far out there', the traumas the characters face is based on real experiences (some of mine but many of others).
