Memory Fragments

NC-Retired 🚫

No, not Proeliator by John Wales. https://storiesonline.net/s/50903/proeliator

But with similar gunpowder and cannon development chapters.

From memory…

The King or Duke or some sort of royalty went out into the 'wilderness' beyond the usual civilization boundaries with a band of 'merry men' to test gunpowder and cannons.

I cannot remember what the rest of the story was about, just that they wanted to keep the secrets.

This fragment has been lingering on the edge of memory for a couple weeks. Hope someone can help.

I'll look again, but I re-read this 2-3 years ago and I do not think this is it.

But thanks for the suggestion.

Possible it might also be Tangent. A section of the story deals with smokeless gun power and mortars.

@zitqhile

Nope, not Gina's Tangent. But your mentioning this does bring back the original from H. Beam Piper where Calvin is abducted across the time conveyors.

But even then I remember that gunpowder was already invented by the priests of Styphon. King Calvin was able to know their 'secret' and make it un-secret.

Thanks

@Zellus

Yes, the protagonist, David Whitehorse, develops gunpowder. But the chemical components are processed in plain sight. Segregated and processed separately and obfuscated by misdirection... move on, nothing to see here kinda deal.

Again, I've re-read this recently and cannot remember him going out to 'the hills and valleys' to perfect the cannons and practice.

And that going out the remote valleys is a key component of the memory.

But for those that haven't read Spirit Quest, it is a great tale by a great author.
