I believe you're thinking of his Art Deco series. It's somewhat similar but with a different background. In the one I'm looking for there never was an American Revolution. The U.S. collectively is New England. Britain, Ireland, France, New England, and others are still ruled by Plantangenet Dynasty, direct descendants of Richard the Lion Heart. George Washington was the Governor General of New England and the MC is an official Royal Investigator. Good try and it's close. Thanks
The Lord D'Arcy series is a dead tree series by Randal Garrett. The MC is a detective in the 1800s, IIRC.the world diverged at the time of Richard Lionheart. He is NOT a magician, but magic is present in the world. He has two assistants , one is his coroner, and one is his magical forensic scientist.

Stultus wrote some magic user stories on this site. They include some mysteries. Also pretty good stories.
I just checked. There are several Lord D'Arcy sequels, written by Normist. They are on the Storyroom site.

Thank you, akarge! That's what I get from not giving full attention to replies. I knew there were additional Lord D'Arcy stories in print from other authors so I skimmed over your second reply. Then I re-read it and checked. The Normist stories are the one I was looking for. Thank you!

I've read them all and all downloaded to my drive, but finally deleted them.
Randall Garrett avoided to use well known persons of our world in his stories, because due to the enormous differences in history and development of both worlds people with the same ancestors (and name) would be incredible rare even in Europe.
Given the far more different colonization of America the possibility for the existence of the same people is nil.
Normist however has George Washington and Bill Clinton in prominent roles.
That broke my suspense of disbelieve and I deleted Normist's stories as inadequate after a rereading binge of Lord D'Arcy and Normist's Robert MacLeod.

This is free amateur fiction. If Normist wants to bring in outside characters for cameos or recurring roles I have no problem with it. It's his way of giving homage to people and characters he likes or dislikes. It's actually pretty common. My favorite cameos so far are Tim McGee and Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

This all depends on the story environment. The Richard Jackson Saga by Banadin starts in a nearly true setting and somewhere the reader realizes it is set in an alternative reality which first only slightly differs from our own. So Ricky meeting Elvis Presley and John Wayne, saving a little boy named Bill Gates from drowning in the ocean, later meeting fictitious people like Texas Ranger Walker and the Ewing family in Dallas looks first like tall tales, but it becomes clear Ricky lives in an alternate reality where these people exist.
This is ok with me I like the Richard Jackson Saga.
The Lord D'Arcy universe as created by Randall Garrett โ with scientific based Magic, an Anglo-French Empire ruled by House Plantagenet โ is an Alternate Reality quite far from our own. The split seems to happen sometime after 1100, clearly visible when Richard I, Cลur de Lion, didn't die 1199. Nearly 800 years of different development, no similarity to our own reality. I really like this universe.
Now comes another writer โ pen name Normist โ takes over Garrett's Universe and introduces famous โ or infamous โ people from our reality as natives of Garrett's Universe, which given the differences in the realities could never have evolved there.
