Last year (or perhaps2024) I read a story about a teen who was moved from the USA to Monaco. He was living there with a family, being educated and learning to sail. After a while they were going to sail across the Mediterranean then across the Atlantic. Whilst in the Mediterranean they rescued another family from a sinking boat. Adventures in the Caribbean and then the baddies killed a friend and he vowed revenge. That's all I remember.
Before it was rewritten as Because you were Cold, it was Lighting in a Bottle (I think).
If my memory is right, it was a two book set with about a five year gap between the first 2/3s of the second book and the final 1/3 of the book.
After another number of years he reposted the two books as one with the new title.

Sage Mullins "Lightning in a Bottle" doesn't fit OPs description at all. It's a do-over about a guy who's doing high school and college in New Jersey and playing in a band.
There is a story - can't remember the name - where a teen boy develops some sort of powers and is sent to France (I think) to recuperate. The sailing comes into play then, there's a rescue of a family, and the boat then sails to the Caribbean and finally the U.S. where the U.S. military/bureaucrats try to confiscate it/him, and he winds up going under water for hours to evade detection and capture. Is this a part of the story you're looking for? Hoping I didn't just gum up the search - but maybe someone will recognize it with the more robust description.
