I read a story with that exact same premise on Reddit. It's called "Waking Dream" by a user called "Swimming_Gur_5025".
It doesn't seem to be a finished story. More an aspiring author asking for input on how to improve.

Yes thats it. I didnt realise I had read this on Reddit, but must have done - I was looking as I remembered it needed an ending and went looking again
