Do-gooder helps older people in neighborhood

PotomacBob ๐Ÿšซ

I read this story maybe 10 years ago. The main character was a young man (high school age I think), who was a do-gooder. He helped older people in the neighborhood, including shoveling snow for a grandmother who lived in the neighborhood. He eventually met the grandmother's granddaughter. I do not remember whether the boy and girl had a romantic or sexual relationship. I do not remember whether they all lived happily ever after. I know it's not much to go on, but it's all I remember.

Thanks to all who answered. The story was, indeed, An Unlikely Protector by Daghda Jim. I gave only two clues in my query and one of those clues turned out to be in error (it wasn't shoveling snow but helping the grandmother with her dog in a rainstorm), and two people nailed it anyway.)
