Lost Story of hero being trained as a Knight

dougb ๐Ÿšซ

I finally bit the bullet and joined SOL. As such I can now download and save some of my favorite stories from the many years I was a free (cheap) user. The problem is that I've forgotten the titles of some of my favorites. I'm going to post information on each as I slowly remember them. This is a short description of the first one whose title I don't remember.
It was set in the times of knights, kings, etc. A young man is being raised by his Mother and Step-father in a neighboring country aligned with the King's country. As I recall his Mother is the sister of the King but I could be remembering that wrong. Anyway, the boy is the 'second son' and can't inherit from his father so he is sent to the King's capital where he is to undergo Knight training. He turns out to be better than all the other trainees and catches the eye of the King's brother who is in charge of the trainees. He also catches the eye of the King's daughter, however, in later chapters she turns out to be a bit of a slut and our hero ends up with another woman. The hero eventually leads the army against the countries foes and his mother is reunited with the King's Court.
I know it is not much to go on but does anyone recognize this story?

Maybe Jay Cantrell's "Always on Guard"? Dad and step-mom though not mom and step-dad...the rest seems to match though.

"Jorgarn Elmwood's only goal was to avoid the life of a priest. He would have settled for becoming a sailor, a soldier or possibly even a thief. So how does he manage to woo and lose a Princess, destroy a would-be empire, raise a new country, avert a civil war and wed a Queen? It's all his stepmother's fault."

Sunseeker.....that's it!! Thank you so much. I should have thought of it because Jay Cantrell is one of my favorite authors here. He hasn't posted since 2020 so I hope he is still around. I've always enjoyed this story along with the Brock Miller stories but my all time favorite is "The Rise of Azkoval". I wish he would come back and finish it. Or if he is gone, perhaps another author could step in.
Anyway, thank you so much.

Unfortunately Jay has not been on the website for 2+ years. His last addition to his writing was 5 1/2 years ago. I don't think he will be adding anything else.

I usually think like that, too, but I just saw a new story from Shrink42, so anything is possible.

@tendertouch

Something I noticed about Shrink42 was that his stories are no longer premier-only once he returned, and I'm pretty certain they had been that way for a year or more.
Looks like we now have coding for the case that an author resurfaces, either as a reader or as a writer.

I usually think like that, too, but...

On that note, perhaps we can hope for The Private to be completed. (It's not behind the paywall, but inactive for ten years.)

I never noticed that. I really don't hold much hope, but he WAS logging in for at least some of that time.

What is "The Private"? I searched here and did not find a story with just that name. I also search "Shrink42" but it was not a story there.

Shrink42 is an author, not a story title.
