This was from a long time back. All I can remember is he was into photography, kept inventing gizmos, and moved into a condo (?) with his girlfriend, his neighbour being an old draughtsman, and there being a drafting table in the attic. Anyone?

The only thing that popped up in my mind immediately is the stories from Ms Friday that I myself recently asked for help finding.
Several of her stories feature artists with interest in photography and drawing and features drafting tables kinda prominently.
Also this brings to mind another story that matches your search but can't remember further details like title or author, sorry.
And I think I found it. All I needed to do is find my old backups of books and there it was:

Getting back to reading the Beth series, I'm not sure this is the one I had in mind as the photography in this one is minor, and in the 'lost' story it was a major element in terms of the main character.
Remembering more, it had to do with the main character taking photography classes (at college) where his tutor was allowing them to use full frame cameras. The story was heavy on the technicalities of photography.
Also they were sort of looking after their older neighbour, especially after he stumbled in the snow.
There was also a collection of really old newspapers found in the attic of the 'condo' or apartment they moved into together.
