Fuzzy details from a story I have not read in a long time. He has a sphere of awareness which expands as the story progresses, and he explores martial arts… Akido if my Swiss cheese brain has it right. If I am not conflating it with another story, he uses his sensory sphere to be a soccer phenomenon in High School.
The expanding sense sphere sounds like Kinetic by Hammingbyrd7. I don't recall a martial art, though the author's protagonists often practice one. The soccer part doesn't fit.

The Aikido lessons start in Ch. 27. That is also when he discovers Ki and starts to discover the various ways he can use it above and beyond what anyone else can do. He starts in soccer well before the Aikido lessons and is a decent player but then gets his arm broken by some bullies. That is what ends up having him looking into Aikido lessons. So it is a few weeks after he discovers Ki and starts practicing with his developing abilities that he gets the cast off and starts to play soccer again. Which is where he discovers that his Ki centering and resultant proximity sense allows him to sense what his close-in opponents are going to do on the soccer field which results in his soccer skills appearing to approach superstar status.
