Protagonist Interrupts Rape of 11yo Girl (CAUTION)

awnlee jawking ๐Ÿšซ

I recently read a story, probably a chapter in an on-going serial, in which the protagonist interrupts the rape of an 11yo girl. Unfortunately I didn't realise at the time I might want to reread that part.

I have an unfinished story in my hopper in which my protagonist stops an 11yo girl from being raped by her drunk father (and he gets beaten up for his trouble). I was contemplating dusting off my story and posting it on SOL. My rape scene isn't salacious but I'd like to compare it with others that are similar so I can have confidence it doesn't break SOL rules. My intention is for readers to be appalled by the prospective rape.

Can anyone supply the names of the story and author?

Cheers,

AJ

Was the story posted after September 2011? If yes, then it either missed being checked down or it did not violate the prohibitions.

The way I read the OP, it's an unposted story that he wrote.

From the OP:

While AJ is not absolutely certain, that makes it likely that the story he is looking for (hey, this is Lost Stories) is pretty recent (and not written by AJ).

You missed something else from the OP

AJ is more looking for validation that his story is within the rules than he is looking for a story that was already posted.

Rather than comparing his story to others already posted (which is no guarantee that they don't violate the rules as Lazeez depends on readers reporting inappropriate content), he is better off consulting Lazeez directly rather than relying on comparisons to other stories.

It is not a question of "missing something" on my part, it seems to be a question of emphasis on yours. AJ is looking for a story and I wished to clarify if the story he was looking for was something recent (most probable) or ancient history.

The fact that he is thinking of completing a story on those lines is just background info.

I think it's recent, but then I have been sampling a few older stories so there's just a chance it isn't.

In any case, there may be other stories on SOL which have similar scenes. Please don't suggest stories with grandfathered scenes.

Actually, without committing plagiarism, I'm looking for inspiration/advice as to how to walk the fine line between appalling the readers without endangering the site.

Lazeez does not individually review every story posted for inappropriate contents, he relies on the stories being reported to him by readers. Especially if it's something very recent, you can't be sure that the other story is on the right side of the line.

I would recommend that you check directly with Lazeez.

A lot will depend on how far the rape gets and how graphic it is.

I would prefer to check with Lazeez after I'm satisfied with my scene. At the moment it's a bit flat. More graphic would have more effect in generating reader revulsion but also create more danger of violating the rules.

Just asking for a friend, but why not just adjust the age of the character to comply with the terms?

That might not work with other aspects of the story. Or it might distort things in odd ways. On another site, which has the limit at age 18, there are almost no "coming of age" stories and more than a few "18 year olds" who with the immaturity, inexperience, and general behavior of 15 year olds.

That's actually true. It doesn't have to be 11 (despite the coincidence between my story and the story I read) but it has to be awful enough to justify the rapist's tight-knit community turning against him and becoming warmer towards the previously excluded protagonist.

I think raping, or attempting to rape your 14 year-old (or a 25 year-old) daughter would be enough.

For me, the age in the story should be below the threshold for statutory rape to generate adequate reader revulsion.

Perhaps I've become desensitised by the misogynist practices of some of the UK's immigrant communities eg in Rochdale.

Where is the story set? Lowest age of consent in the US is 16, not counting Romeo and Juliet exceptions.

IIRC, I haven't specified a location. But I think setting the story in America would be a problem for me, given my native language.

I don't generally read stories with rape or tags so couldn't evaluate that.
That might be a problem with others as well.

I have to admit I'm disappointed that nobody has been able to recall the story, or any similar story. That may well be a factor.

IMO it's a reasonably common trope that bad guys involved in people-trafficking or slavery sample the wares, no matter what their ages. And when the hero bursts in to bring the bad guy to justice, the bad guy often has an underage child in their bed. If the rape isn't described explicitly, as is required by Canadian law, it may well not be tagged.

I don't understand why you have to get graphic about sex or nudity in describing the rape scene. Without straying over any lines you can be obvious what is happening.

I have no intention of physically describing the victim but I want to maximise reader revulsion at what was happening so they can empathise with the sudden change by the community in accepting the outsider protagonist.

An example where showing is preferable to telling. And another reason why the 'lost story' I'm looking for could be informative.

I think the key aspect for you isn't that the rape needs to be especially heinous. It's that it needs to be particularly unambiguous. The perp's friends have to be unable to rationalize his behavior.

Dicrostonyx ๐Ÿšซ

@DBActive

While I respect your choice, I find that not all tags are used consistently.

In theory, tags are being used to indicate what kinds of sexual content are being fetishised in a given story, but as the site has grown and more types of stories are being published there are also some authors using tags as trigger warnings for subjects of discussion.

For example, if a character rape happens entirely off-page but is referenced due to the character or other characters struggling with their recovery, should that have the tag or not? And if it does, how does the reader differentiate between a story of sexualised rape and one that simply references it?

There's no easy answer and there's nothing wrong with avoiding any story that has content you don't like, but it's not always true that every tag on a story is describing something that is depicted on page.

Replies:   DBActive
DBActive ๐Ÿšซ

@Dicrostonyx

If the rape tag is not used to for an assault intended to be sexually arousing, that can and should be stated in the description.
Probably there should be separate tags for descriptions of rape, non-consent, torture and violence that aren't intended to be sexualized.

Dicrostonyx ๐Ÿšซ

@awnlee jawking

Honestly, if the character's age and the situation of the protagonist seeing it happen is important to the story, I'd probably write it as minimally as possible, then create the revulsion later based on the protagonist's memories and reactions to what they saw.

Something like:

"As I opened the door I saw Paul on top of his daughter, naked, and rushed forwards trying to pull him off her."

Even this is borderline. Audiences aren't stupid. You can describe the situation with a simple "Little Kaley was whimpering softly as her father moved on her" or even "used her" instead of moved.

What I absolutely don't want to do is fetishize the rape in any way. The more you describe what is actually happening, the more you risk it crossing over to eroticism.

That's a good point. I'd certainly pass the scene by Lazeez if the story got that far.

I did a SOL search for stories containing all of compound (bad guys always live in compounds), girl, and rape. Sol has over 1000 matching stories. I'm not going to search though them looking for the one I vaguely remember :-(

Good guys, too, at least in one story. ๐Ÿ˜œ And there are rapes and attempted rapes discussed (but not described except as memories and even then vaguely).

The only one I can remember is from the first chapter of Jay Cantrell's https://storiesonline.net/s/11098/lifeline-drama-story and is background info to his ex-girlfriend "Pam".

Pam's early life was a mess. Her mother had died when Pam was just a little girl and she and her brother were raised by an alcoholic father. The duo was removed by Social Services when Pam's brother almost killed their father the night the man tried to rape her when she was 12. Her brother was 16 and spent the next two years in a juvenile home.

and

Pam spent the next four years being molested by her father's brother after Social Services stuck her with that family. I guess it must run in the bloodline or something.

As you can see, very off-screen.

Wes Boyd's "Stray Kitten" never made it to this site (I think) but I think the girl was 17 there anyway. As for her serial abusers, they never stood trial, and when she was asked what she wanted to do with their bodies she said something along the lines of "put them in the nearest dumpster".

Thank you for trying, but that isn't the story I'm failing to remember. I'm not sure, but I think in the story, the protagonist may have shot the bad guy while in the act.

I don't think off-screen would work for my story. I applaud Dicrostonyx's samples - they're along the right lines.

As I implied, that part fits the Wes Boyd story. I'm pretty sure Jan was 17 at the time Cody offed her father and brother.
