CMSIX

Guillermo42 ๐Ÿšซ

CMSIX wrote at least two stories "John and Argent" and "Nano Verse" (I believe were the titles). He begin to rewrite those stories and changed them quite a bit. Where can I find the original stories before the changes. I reference to the original stories on ASSTR however stories not there.

There may be other originals that he started to rewrite.

Thank You for any information

@Guillermo42

I believe John and Argent is the original version, it never was rewritten.
NanoVerse is the "Universe" containing those stories here on SOL, what you want is the contents of the subdirectory "nanovirusov" (for Original Version) which was on AssTr, except that AssTr has vanished again.
1. You could try the Wayback Machine
2. I could hunt around and see if I still have a copy somewhere.

@Guillermo42

The title was nanovirus

The version which received a Clitorides award is archived here:

https://web.archive.org/web/20070106034532/http://www.asstr.org/~cmsix/nanovirusov/index.htm

Maybe we should restore it here.

Regarding John and Argent the 2004 version is lost to archive.org (nothing before 2007).

I have a SOL version from 2003-2004 with chapter 1-102.
That version was not part of the Nanoverse.

In November 2006 he rewrote chapter 102 and expended.

I'm not sure how different are the first 101 chapter of the 2003 version from the SOL 2009-2010 reposted version but at first glance the changes looks more like typo correction and rewording than rewrite.

Maybe find a usenet archive? I know those stories ("Nanovirus" and "John and Argent") were originally posted there before being uploaded to SOL.

In November 2006 he rewrote chapter 102 and expended.

Please put us out of our misery - did you really mean 'extended' or 'expanded'?

@awnlee jawking

expanded

That's the one I butchered. But expend may not be that inaccurate. I feel that the latest cmsix rewrites often degraded the story while polishing it. Moving the character from funny curmudgeon to insufferable asshole.

around 2003 cmsix posted to SOL before posting to usenet.

Nanovirus is on usenet mostly as a repost from SOL, John and Argent isn't.

If it interests anybody, I have two versions of Nanovirus.

1. The Storiesonline epub version which shows as Chapters 1 - 100 and is Incomplete and is dated 2007.

2. An asstr.org version in htm format consisting of 46 posts all dated Wed Aug 14 2002. Post Number 46 is Headed as the Epilogue.

I have all 5 of the stories in the Nanoverse series that I saved from a different source back in 2004.

Red and Victor, Nanovirus are two. What are the other three? John and Argent? A Log Truck Driver in Outer Space?

@Dinsdale

"Red and Victor", "Nanovirus", "My Mom's Fuzzy Heart", "I Feel Lucky", and "John and Argent" are the stories I normally associate with the Nanovirus universe.

"A Log Truck Driver in Outer Space" might also set in the same universe as the five stories above, but it was not added to the Nanovirus universe.

Note that Mom's Fuzzy Heart introduces a character who later becomes a secondary character in "I Feel Lucky".

In Order:
Red & Victor
I Feel Lucky
My Fuzzy Heart
Nanovirus
John and Argent

Log Truck is not part of NV.

Many of cmsix's tales start out with recognizable situations that might be (at least) semi-autobiographical.

Over the road truck driver. Log truck driver. Steel mill worker. Training horses and mules. And others.

At the beginning of this tale, https://storiesonline.net/s/57336/six-days-on-the-road he describes heart problems and needing a quad-bypass.

The date on the story is August 2008. About that time I remember seeing a photo of him with bare chest and a massive red scar from the open heart surgery for his quad-bypass.

At that time he was posting about his life on a usenet group and living near San Marcos Texas and dealing with family issues. IIRC, he was so disagreeable that sister and son/daughter did not want him living with them.

At some point, 2009 - 2011 he moved nearer to his hometown of Atlanta Texas. And then sometime in 2012-13 he was trimming his big toe nail and cut too deep. Untreated, that turned to gangrene and the ultimate result was amputation of a foot. Again, IIRC, he tried to live independently but could not and that resulted in his going into a "care facility" where I suspect his irascible personality caused him to be 'medicated' so the staff could manage his daily life better.

Over many months he was able to get access to the internet from time to time and he complained about not being able to write and post stories. Poor wi-fi signal and needing a keyboard IIRC.

I never met the man but I suspect his mind ran amok with how his life could have turned out different if only some alien had intervened.

Does anyone have any recollections of Chessley?

As I recall there was a movement amongst his fans to send him a keyboard. His preference was for an IBM style keyboard with the resistance and click.
Don't recall hearing from or about him after that.

From his blog as archived on the web archive

NanoVirus - This is a rewrite of NanoVirus. There's a lot of cleaning up going on and some additions and changes to make it fit into my NanoVerse. In Progress

NanoVirus - Original Version - Earth has been purged with many more women left than men. This is the original award winning version of NanoVirus. It was co-winner of a Golden Clitoride and as best I can tell it is the only story ever to win two Silver Clitorides. I'm leaving this version up, with all its warts visible, while I work on a rewrite and extension.
