I can't remember the title or the author. Story starts with MC (an army veteran) facing a trial for a crime he didn't commit. He breaks into the DA's house looking for evidence that he has been framed. The DA returns home and accidentally shoots himself while attempting to get his gun from the safe and the house catches fire. MC escapes and decides to hide in the mountains he is now also wanted for the attempted murder of the DA. He drives to the start of a hiking trail and rescues a girl from sexual assault. While on the run in the mountains he finds an old stone cabin. Inside the cabin he finds the diary of an old prospector who died after being mauled by a bear. There is a massive manhunt for the MC and a marine sniper team is sent to take him out. I think the MC is native American.
